Volcano and Palm....seemingly completely opposite yet nature demonstrates how they can co-exist in the Big Island, reminding us that we can all live together regardless of our differences.
I remember painting this piece shortly after the covid. As we slowly started coming out of our hideaways, we weren’t sure if our life could ever go back to the way it was prior to the pandemic. At that time, we were experiencing a lot of personal turmoil. People were more divided than ever even though they used to be friends or were actual family members. During this depressing time, I saw an image of palm trees standing on a bed of lava. This arrangement seemed almost impossible, yet nature decided it into reality. I was encouraged by the image, knowing that two completely different elements found a way to co-exist. It was quite empowering. Painting this image was therapeutic and provided me with hope and courage as we moved forward into the unknown.
