In the north west side of Hokkaido Island, there is a long stretch of scenic road called ‘Ororon Line’. It stretches 290 km, runs between Ishikari city and Wakkanai, which is at the top of the Hokkaido Island. Ororon Line is known for its beautiful seascape (especially sunset), and horizontally lined up wind turbines. On a sunny day, you can see Rishiri Island (a.k.a Rishiri Fuji) rising up on the horizon while driving through the Ororon Line. I admit I’m biased (because Hokkaido is my hometown) but this route provides one of the most scenic views to visitors. At a stop named Shosanbetsu, you will find a red gate standing by itself on the shore. It is part of the Toyosaki Konpira Shrine, one of the most photographed subjects in that area. Needless to say, this shrine was one of my top items to paint.
