When I was in Vermont in late September, I saw a picture perfect sunset by Lake Champlain.  As if saving a photo on my phone was not enough, I had to reproduce it on canvas.  In my mind, the sky is one of the most beautiful yet complex things created by nature. It will change its colors in a moments notice, not to mention the season or time of the day.

If any one wondered why the sky is blue when the sun is the brightest, and why sky becomes yellow or reddish as the evening progresses, the reason is because of the way sunlight interacts with our atmosphere.  When the Sun is high in the sky, it appears as its true color, white. At sunrise and sunset, we see a much redder sun. This is because the sunlight is passing through a thicker layer of our atmosphere. This scatters the blue and green light along the way, allowing the redder light to pass through and illuminate the clouds in a beautiful array of red, orange, and pink.  Interesting, isn’t it?  The more I study the sky, the more colors I notice in the sky.  I especially enjoy seeing the morning or evening sky on a bit of a cloudy day because of that.  I wish I could paint all those pretty skys, but it changes its colors in seconds and doesn’t seem to give me enough time for that.
