Take a stroll in Kyoto to find a moment of zen as you arrive at the Golden Pavilion.
The Golden Pavilion was one of my top ‘must go to’ places when I visited Kyoto. I was warned by my sister (who lives in Tokyo) at that time that there are millions of tourists visiting there and it would be chaotic. You wouldn’t enjoy it. Well, I ignored her advice. I don’t live in Japan and I don’t know if I would ever be able to return to Kyoto in the future, so I decided that I needed to experience the pavilion during this adventure. It turned out that my mister wasn’t wrong. The place was indeed chaotic, but everywhere in Kyoto was chaotic with millions of people and I just had to accept it. Even with a massive number of tourists, I was able to enjoy the Golden Pavilion, perhaps because what I saw was so refreshing after being away from Japan for so many years. I appreciated the funny shaped bonsai trees, rocks, and of course the pavilion itself. After the adventurous stroll, I stopped by the tea house and enjoyed some drinks.
Looking back, visiting Golden Pavilion was a great experience and I’m glad I did it. People may think feeling ‘zen’ requires a quiet space but I was content even with chaos of the situation. I probably had the right mind set to be able to appreciate what I saw. If you ask, ‘Would you go back again?’, my answer is ‘Yes!’.
